My swing was finished. In 1887, Arthur Carey came for the first time ^ [[on this day.]] Miss Soper, one of my papa's pupils called for the first time ^[[in the after-noon.]] She wanted to see my papa. he was painting up on Pine Hill, so I took her to him. Ned Hill gave us a snake.

Aunt Esther was expected. We went in the boat, and took [[Theano]], (named [[Thea]] when we found that it was a [[underline]] male [[/underline]] cat.)

Aunt Mary came at about three o'clock. Gerald and I walked about half a mile to meet her, and rode home with her in the stage. Gladys was two years old. I think it was a sunny day.
