49. E. 20th New York July 11'. 97 My Dear Mr. Hart I could not be certain about Chas. W. Javis's Death though I thought he died 20 years ago until this afternoon, when I saw J Addison Richards so long Secretary of the Academy of Design. He says C. W. J's death was about that time rather earlier; he thinks before the war I knew him slightly. He painted portraits somewhat in his fathers style, his of far less merit. I do not remember his portrait of Henry Clay. There is a cabinet portrait full length I think [^of Henry Clay] by [underlined:[Linen]] an Englishman who painted capital portraits as you remember about 1840 (earlier & later) Chas. W.
