My object is now to reduce as much as possible the working force of the Inst[[on superscript]]. The death of Mr. Varden leaves a vacancy which I do not intend to fill - Mr. De Beush must sheek(sic) other employment although on account of the loss of his furniture and his tools I think some compensation should be allowed him. He has been connected with the Institution upwards of 12 years and during that time has rendered good service His tools were lost while in the service of the Institution and ought to be paid for, I propose to give him a leave of absence until he can get into other employment.
