 [[underline]] Year 1866. Journal Vol II. [[underline]]

x| Aug. 14 [[underline]] Caryaevena [[/underline]] Fitch. Inside now dark [[strikethrough]] 4 [[/strikethrough]] crimson, more or less blackish. Of 21 opened, 9 were empty, 8 contained mother-larva eggs & larvae, 1 eggs & larvae only, 1 eggs only & 2 larvae only. No less than 7 (some of which were otherwise empty) contained a white inquilinous [[underline]] acarus, [[/underline]] 1 contained 3 thrips imagos & nothing else, & one a lepid. 16-footed larva & nothing else. Two contained a chalcid. pupa.

Aug 15. Found on a Black Walnut 100 yds from my other tree a brood of [[underline]] Datana ministra [[underline]] averaging about .60 or .70 inch long. About 150 in number. placed 1/3 (by guess) on Bk Walnut, 1/3 on Apple & 1/3 on Oak.

Aug. 16 Those on Oak & Apple mostly of the leaves & don't eat except one or two nibbling a little. All came to nothing.

Aug 17. Young locust borers (1/2 inch long) recd. today from Kansas have [[underline]] no legs. [[/underline]] Spiracle mesothoracic, as in Cerambycides.

[[underline]] Salicis verruca. [[underline]] Found in 2, larvae evidently cecidom. Others solid. An acardan gall on same leaf, but distinct & hollow.

xx | Aug. 18 One [[underline]] Crataegi vermiculus [[/underline]] gall on lower side of leaf, others on same leaf above. Larvae there as usual.

[[underline]] Crataegi plica. [[underline]] Larva now orange. (Bb. brown [[images]]). .10 [[insertion]] - .13 [[/insertion]] long 2 1/2 times as long as wide. [A single larva [[insertion]] •• = mouth [[/insertion]] (inquiline) [[symbol]] Bb. black •• ([[ce?]]
