One time he come as uh black snake; an' he began to stan' up. An' w'en he stan' up, he say, "Meow!"

I say "Oh, pshaw! dats de same cat." [Laugh.]

So w'en I say so, an' he say, "Dats all right den; I'll come as uh bird."

I say, "Well, if you come as a bird, all you go to do is sing sweet song an' I will know who you is."

So, he say, "Look uh me here."

I say, "Who is dat? Dat's nutt'n but uh bird."

"Yea, I come to sing mornin' song to you. I hope you will be glad w'en I come."

Den---den he degan to sing; an' he sing.  So [when] he done sing, he said: "All chil'ren mus' be happy.  'cause" he say, "Fort [Fourth] uh July come once uh year an' every body have dere share.  So we will dress an' go out to de party; an' we'll have de drum an' de bass, an' all play fuh we.  An' dey begin to watlz roun'; an' w'en dey waltz roun'. dey say: Hello boys an' girls."  Dey say: "Dis is de way we joys weselves in de summuh time.  Ha! ha! ha! ha! ------."
