Dinner finished shortly before midnight. Then Celine and myself went to grill room, where we were joined by Baskerville, Bancroft, Lurk  Miller, Wheeler of [[strikethrough]] R[ [/strikethrough]] Providence, (the same man whose aquaintance I made 18 years ago on the steamer which brought me to this happy land) & Dr. Comey. We took some refreshments and remained until 1 P.M.
[[strikethrough]] Jan [[/strikethrough]] The hotel restaurants were filled with people [[strikethrough]] for [[/strikethrough] celebrating New Year.
[[margin]] Jan 1, 1909. [[/margin]] Slept late and walked to Johns Hopkins and took things easily all day. In evening we went to

the Darwin centennial celebration dinner in a place called Lehman's Hall, where the American Association for Advancement of Science had met.
A regular slum-gullion dinner. Badly served, badly cooked, and repulsively served. Waiter said: "could not give salt, had no time! so we had to eat saltless soup without salt! Fortunately the speeches made up for all this. We walked home.
