Monday June 4th 1849 - Clear and pleasant. in the afternoon a light breeze sprang up from the South East. the passengers amused themselves to day in trying various kinds of experiments, such as testing the transparency of the water. a common white plate about 8 inches in diameter was seen at the depth of 200 feet from the Surface, a bottle was corked tight and lowered to the depth of 200 fathom, to ascertain whether water could force out the cork and fill with water, which was the opinion of some that it would. upon drawing the bottle to the surface again, it was found to be crushed to atoms. Warm and pleasant. a light wind from the North. the passengers are employing themselves in various kinds of occupation during the day while it is pleasant weather. all have something to do preparatory to landing on the Shores of California - The evenings are beautiful. the Moon is full, and with a clear starry Sky. makes a Moon light scene upon the water splendid indeed, what a time for reflecting every thing is still and quiet. not a being is about save those guardians of the night watch, whose tread alone breaks the stillness of the hour.
