Wednesday July 4th 1849. Weather verry Warm. light Wind from the North West. the weather was so uncomfortably hot there was but little doing throughout the day. in the evening Mr H C. Gardiner delivered an Oration, in honour of our independence, which was verry able. and reflected much credit upon the author. Mr Reynolds read the declaration of independence, after which the passengers enjoyed themselves untill a late hour, with Music, Singing & dancing. Martial Music by the Fife & Drum, for a substitute for a Drum, they used the head of a Banjo. Lat 11°55' North Long 119°18' West -
