from the copper in the metal fittings, had resisted decay and was nearly intact when found. The workmen had however broken it up, preserving only the bronze pieces and throwing away the wooden parts as valueless.
There were also three bronze snaffle bits with ring cheek-pieces ^[[(cf. fig. 5)]]. Their number may indicate that only three horses were yoked to the car, as we know was sometimes done in ancient China (in such cases the third horse may have been an [underline]equus funalis[/underline].) On the other hand, the chariot of which we saw the bronze fittings may have been a quadriga, the fourth bit having been overlooked or stolen. Later we obtained evidence that with the chariot had been interred its team also; but we were unable to ascertain definitely the number of horses thus buried.

[underline]Minor Bronzes.[/underline]

We learned subsequently that search among the numerous baskets of fragments brought to light two [underline]ko[/underline] [Chinese character] or dagger-axes and a socketed spearhead ([underline]mao-tzu[/underline] [Chinese character]), all of bronze. Somewhat similar spearheads were afterward found at the late Shang Dynasty site near An-yang [Chinese character], also in Honan. The Shang specimens were provided with two loops at the sides, vestigial in character to judge from their small size. In the Hsin Cheng instance (presumably of middle Chou date) no loops appear to be present. (9)

There were also later found two bronze ferrules. Of these, one was apparently the butt-cap ([underline]shu shou[/underline][Chinese character]) of a spear, while the other, considerably smaller (called a [underline]shu chin[/underline] [Chinese character] covered the end
