and nineteenth centuries at the village of Battrang a few
miles down the river from Hanoi, was interesting as perhaps
the most graphic and conclusive among the many proofs that
Chinese culture has long been the influence on which these
peoples have depended for their main inspiration. I later
visited the kilns and saw the work of throwing upon the wheel,
which was done in the Chinese manner.
    Daily intercourse with the staff of experts and constant
access to the remarkable library served to increase my respect
for the Hanoi School. I realize that our own institution
can do no better than to take this for a model on which to
build a structure suited to our peculiar needs.
