At 4 P.M came Ladow who brought me a little gramophone [[strikethrough]] and [[/strikethrough]] (called [[Sonora?]]) and another matrix.  Told me that Seaman and he are working in common.  Tried our gramophone records made before the fire.  Got them out the ruins they were all dirty greasy and black and it required much scrubbing with Sapolis and gasoline to clean them somewhat.  They had been exposed to rain & wet over and over again

notwithstanding this they gave a good sound and [[underlined]] for the first time I heard Bakelite talk [[/underlined]].  Ladow says sound is good and smoother than for ordinary records.  I cannot distinguish yet these samples are about in the worst possible condition to give results.  What astonishes me most is to find that those which contain much ground [[strikethrough]] f [[/strikethrough]] wood flour and no surfacing gave a good sound too.
