Aug. 6. Slept well in that stuffy ill ventilated room of Webers' Hotel  For their shabby genteel installation they charge just as much as for a good hotel in New York  Got up early at 6. AM packed my valise and took train to Ghent.  Ghent seems the same old shallow, slow, selfsatisfied place.  Great joy in meeting mother.  arrived there about 11 AM took lunch with [[underlined]] mother [[/underlined]] all alone. while Renchel prepared things.  Servant girl had left a few days ago.  Found Renchel very occupied with house

work.  This will do her good.  Kept talking with mother alone until about 5.P.M. She seemed very happy and very wide awake, no trace of age in her reasoning and her conservation.  When I left she did not cry as usually.  Took a bite at Station [[and?]] arrived in Antwerp after dark.  About midnight drove to steamer [[underline]] Vaderland [[/underline]] of Red Star Line  A warm stuffy day.  Much noise.  [[Stewed?]] feeling bad sleep.  Steamer sailed off early in morning at 6 AM.  Am glad to be on the water again and homeward bound.
