United States of America now & forever! 

In Davis Straits near Sukkertoppen, Greenland.[[divided via a vertical zig-zag line]] 
Under all sail for Holsteinburg Greenland. 

This day - glorious day to all lovers of American Freedom & Independence & of Washington - was ushered in by cheers & the firing of guns by the whole Ship's Company.
 
Ever since leaving the port of New London, Conn. May 29[[superscript]]th[[/subscript]], all have been desirous of reaching Holsteinburg by the Fourth of July that we might celebrate the day there; but head-winds

& calms, however, have been too numerous & prolonged that we should advance in accordance to our wishes &  preparations.

We are now within 60 miles of Holsteinburg.  There is yet hope that we may be there by VI O'clock PM.  One thing I might say there is great probability of our reaching there before Sun-Set!

   Capt. Buddington, a whole souled, true American, myself, Smith & Gardiner & several others did not retire last night, as we intended to be ahead of all others in giving the 1st Salute on the Morning of the Fourth.
