the Sex Skillings to Smith for 4 lbs. of tobacco worth 168 cents has left H. with his family and that of his friends. It seems the slim-plaster, Sex Skillings is equivalent only to 4 cts, a little less! Smith is now minus 4 lbs [[strikethrough]] of [[/strikethrough]] tobacco & the "Sex Skillings" besides!! I say three cheers for Sampson, the Equimaux! He outwitted two of our smart Yankees and done it very honestly beside - this is a fact!
The exact transaction is one well worthy of Record - [[strikethrough]] It [[/strikethrough]] I know Sampson is innocent of doing the least wrong - in a fair mercantile sense.
Sterry still declares that he really thought the "Sex Skillings" bill [[strikethrough]] sh [[/strikethrough]] Bill was six Yankee shillings - Both acknowledge that they were anxious to get some Greenland money that they might buy "some [[insertion]] thing to [[/insertion]] drink" in [[strikethrough]] the [[/strikethrough]] town. (See record Monday July 9th) Smith & Sterry [[insertion]] & Sex Skillings [[/insertion]] will be a theme for many of us for many a day. All hands join

in thrusting upon S & S [[strikethrough]] a [[/strikethrough]] frequent reminders of this rich Joke!
(see record commencing this day)
Gov. Elbery in the conversation to-day stated that Greenland belongs to the King of Denmark the only dependency that is controlled exclusively by the King. Much fault is found with this by the people - much written in the papers. Those who are for the King having exclusive control contend that [[insertion, in pencil]] otherwise [[/insertion in pencil]] the poor Esquimaux would at once become [[strikethrough]] def [[/strikethrough]] debased - loose all the good influences that are now at work for their benefit. Throwing open the parts of Greenland would be followed by vessels of every [[strikethrough]] land [[/strikethrough]] [[insertion]] country [[/insertion]] visiting the land of the Esquimaux purchasing their skins oil and bone for liquor. The Esquimaux will dispose of their all to obtain liquor. Gov E said [[strikethrough]] [[insertion]] that [[/insertion]] not [[strikethrough]] for [[insertion]] $ [[/insertion]] 200. - for anything in the world he would not sell an Esqu a glass of spirituous liquors!

Transcription Notes:
Apparently from the crew list in Charles Hall's book 'Life with the Esquimaux. W.R. Sterry was the blacksmith & cooper on board.
