May 29.  (Sunday). Beautiful day. [[underline]] 1910[[/underline]] Blank telephoned me he was in town so after lunch went to fetch him with motor. went on motor excursion stopping [[strikethrough]] a few minutes [[/strikethrough]] ^[[one hour]] at Snug Rock and brought him back in evening. He is much more educated and cultured than he looks and has very intelligent conversation. This morning while sitting on steps of our Piazza and looking towards Hudson we suddenly heard shooting of cannon salute at

Yacht Club and whistling and tooting of passing steamers and Celine suddenly exclaimed [[underline]]"There flies Curtiss." [[/underline]]

 This was my first sight of a [[underline]]flying machine [[/underline]] in operation. A brownish contrivance very much like a dragon fly, gracefully flying ahead in a straight line over the river towards New York, about the height of the Palisades. Flying so fast that I had trouble to follow it going at about rate of a mile a minute Seemed surer in its flight than a bird. This was Curtiss who in the morning had left Albany and arrived in New York and thus won the prize of $20.000 offered by "The World". An admirable sight to behold and Intelligent Man [[strikethrough]] backing [[/strikethrough]] backing his
