There is a sharp line outside irrigated city; there again begins the gray dusty, sun shriveled sagebrush. To put the climax to this all. the son of the engineer Miller, who started irrigation here [[strikethrough]]here[[/strikethrough]], and thereby created the ideal city, planned the Mission Hotel, a triumph of art and practical comfort combined. Cool evening, [[strikethrough]]?[[strikethrough]]bright starlit sky.  Took excellent supper at Hotel, then walked back to our car which was side tracked. Delightfully cool night.
July 10. Up early at [[underline]]Los- Angeles[[/underline]]. Breakfast at station. Then trolley car ride with "Megaphone man" thru city. This is Sunday but city is wide-open. Visit to

[[margin]]Los Angeles[[/margin]]San Gabriel Mission. Bought some ^[[prayer]] beads for ^[[my]] mother and sister. Further Trolley ride thru Pasadena. Luxurious hotels & magnificent residences yet does not impose so much as Riverside because trolley cars and dirty roadways. Visit to Gabriel Farm. [[margin]]Henry Noel Potter[[/margin]]Met there Dr. H. N. Potter who now lives in neighborhood, tells me his gold mine ^[[at Bull Frog]] was a failure. More trolley car and more megaphone until we reach a Hotel called Naples near the sea. A lunch there, then walk to the beach. Sight of Pacific Ocean, then further trolley car ride to Long-Beach. Bought some shells and walked along Then Dr. Colin ^[[Calm]] invited us at the Virginia Hotel, whence back by trolley to Los Angeles. walked thru rich well kept streets - fine stores. All city
