Whitaker. Restful and refreshing night
Nov. 13. [[red underline]] Demuth [[/red underline]] and his old brother came here this morning. Showed me ^[[a slab]] of imitation amber they had purchased in Vienna from [[Remitsch?]]. splendid [[strikethrough]] bits [[/strikethrough]] pipe stems they made of it
Excellent amber color and very transparent. Smells much ammonia if heated but does not have the smell of Bakelite made with cresol. The [[red underline]] Loebs [[/red underline]] and the [[red underline]] Baskerville's [[/red underline]] expected here for lunch. At 1 P.M. Loeb telephones his car has punctured tires. so I went to fetch him with George with my car. But Lewis has fixed our clutch so clumsily that we get left. Left George with car and I took electric surface car to

Van Cortland to meet the others. Car hauled in by Brady. All this very irritating and due to sheer carelessness. I find out George smashed three more electric lamps by carelessness. When I see how little comfort we have for all our expense I sometimes get disgusted with the whole way of living. I told so to Celina she seems to take it as a personal matter which is her mistake because she undoubtedly helps much personally to make things run right. But the whole system is wrong
What's the use of these big houses except as boarding places for servants and means of unnecessary waste?

Very busy all morning. Hurried to New York. Came home about 8 PM. Supper alone.
