Then I went to [[strikethrough]] Custom house [[strikethrough]] U.S. [[Appraisers?]] stores to meet [[Bull?]] head [[chemist?]]. told him about [[red underline]] Vienna Bakelite [[/red underline]] being imported [[red underline]] as amber. [[/red underline]]
Wrote him on piece of paper how to recognize Bakelite. He seemed much interested.  Took early train home.
Dec. 2.  Watched eagerly [[red underline]] asbestos covering [[/red underline]] of [[red underline]] rear of house [[/red underline]] so as to cover shingles. [[red underline]] Bakelite varnish does good service. [[/red underline]] Looks well
Walked to Greystone. then train to New York. [[red underline]] Dyer [[/red underline]] startled me with his proposition to offer [[red underline]] $5000 [[/red underline]] outright [[red underline]] for option [[/red underline]] on license for Bakelite, [[red underline]] non exclusive to use for phonographs . He to pay us $20000 a year + what we ask. per lb.  May was present [[/red underline]]

I wrote proposition on paper after repeating it.  Told him would submit proposition to board of directors. [[red underline]] Hasslacher [[/red underline]] seemed very pleased.  Have they been experimenting until [[red underline]] found out they have to go thru my patents and have their last 
16 barrels formaldehyde been used for Bakelite instead of condensite? Do they want to make sure that nobody gets ahead of them and gets exclusive monopoly before they make sure that they can use it? Saturday Dec.3 [[red underline]] Townsend [[/red underline]] arrived here early.  Conference with him all morning in regard to [[red underline]] Bakelite Patents. [[/red underline]]  Explained him ammonia and hexamethylenetetramine situation. took lunch here and then Lewis drove him to New. York.  Spent remainder of day in laboratory.  Told
