Sept 4.  Up early walked to building of Daughters of American Revolution.  I was next to [[red underline]] [[Eysle?]] [[/red underline]] in [[Est---?]].  [[red underline]] President Taft [[/red underline]] had sprained ankle so Nichols represented him. [[red underline]] Walden [[/red underline]] made best speech. x_ Es int cine Lust zu Leben! He cried out as a final sentence.

After lunch with Dr. [[red underline]] Cushman [[/red underline]] and wife at cafe Republique. Very hot and sultry. Afternoon reception at White House. [[red underline]] President [[/red underline]] was in roller chair. Big Eastroom filled to utmost and exceedingly hot. Good [[red underline]] speech of Taft on Patent Reform. [[/red underline]] Afterwards garden party on the lawn and [[red underline]] Taft [[/red underline]] receiving visitors in his roller chair, chatting with each of them.
Evening private dinner of [[red underline]] Wiley [[/red underline]] at the Raleigh.  [[red underline]] Sir William Ramsay [[/red underline]] and [[red underline]] Lady R. [[/red underline]] there also the [[red underline]] Lindets [[/red underline]] etc and all the other important visitors.  Also [[red underline]] Dr. Nicols [[/red underline]]
Very successful affair.
