Morning wind fresh E. Bar. 29.678 For the last three days, Akutan volcano has been uttering loud rumblings, like cannonading, at regular intervals. Yesterday being calm and perfectly clear puffs of smoke & steam were seen to rise at intervals and appeared coincident with the sounds. Makushin is said to have broken out ^[[insertion]] last November [[/insertion]] in a new place, nearer the bay in the West side of the island. Ther. 33. Max 47 1/2 Min 27.

1870 In July Bendel started from Kuskowkwim for Nunivak and meeting a strong NW wind & being short of water sailed for Unimak which they reached in 4 or 5 days. making land in about lon 165. beat all day without making anything the day being clear. Might

thick continued beating and about 9 A.M. the fog lifted and they found themselves off Akhun Bay. The wind hauled a little fairer & they proposed to stand into the Bay but the fog lifted again and they found themselves off Captains Bay near Cape Kalekhta. A dead calm prevented their working in and in the night the tide carried them to the eastward as far as the low of Unalga. The first stretch was performed in 24 hours. Same voyage drifted from Cape Newenham to Hagenmeister Id in night
