In 1868 a whaling vessel stove in the ice off Cape St. Thaddeus drifted ashore in Seniavine straits - shortly after the ice passed out of the latter - says Chapman. Also in 1871 late in May ice broke up off Plover Bay leaving the sea navigable there and by the middle of June any vessel might have sailed there had she been able to cut through the floe ice to the S & W.
