Weather was much milder and I slept very comfortably having arranged [[strikethrough]] the [[/strikethrough]] old mattress over the frame of the bunk.
Aug 13.  Up at 8 AM.  The boys still fast asleep.  ^Felt somewhat gloomy.^ They arranged my bunk with the planks and dressed it with balsam boughs.  This is much more pleasant than that old mattress.  Spent my time roaming thru the woods and wielding the axe.  The boys went with their canoe to Raquette Station.  Came home late, while I was starting the stove.  Brought provisions and letters and six bottles of beer.  Busy time in cooking like usual; then both of them ate as fast as they could.  Good appetites!  I heated a small pressure can

and with a few excellent boiled potatoes and fresh bread had an excellent meal.  
Went to bed after dark while the boys kept up chatting till midnight.  This balsam bough bunk is excellent.
Aug 14 Slept well and got up before eight; felled a balsam tree for a blanket pole and barked it and [[some?]] further axe exercise.  Took one orange and three milk chocolate tablets feel fine.  Begin to get used to my new surroundings.  After my muscles will be hardened  some more will feel better at ease.  About noon the boys left for the carry.  I started the fire towards dusk but they did not come back.  As they had mentioned that they were to stay  away and had left even without a hat I imagined
