Chandler[[/red underline]] toastmaster. Drove Whitaker and Hamlin home. at 12 P.M.
April 22. This morning had visit of old Mr. [[red underline]] William Odell [[/red underline]], a mechanical engineer and steam generating expert. The Odell farm was originally this part of Yonkers. See Odell Avenue etc. Told me rich concern is infringing

one of his patents and refuses to settle and threatens endless litigation on the ground that he is poor and has only a few years to live.  Asked to help him to a position. says he is on his last dollar. In order to help him bought his his little sailboat on his own terms. Seemed to feel overwhelmed with gratitude.  Gave him small temporary job fixing up little boiler in laboratory.- This is a pitiful situation. fine clean intelligent old man reduced to such straights. Told me afterwards did not know where to sleep nor to get his next meal if I had not helped him out
