W. Atlee Burpee.

My dear grandfather often said that " fine crops depended not upon whether the land was good or bad, but upon the farmer [[underlined]] on [[/underlined]] the land."
Many years of experience makes me add to these wise words, "and the seed, and man behind the seed!"
Thinking along the lines of integrity and honesty, added to vast knowledge, and the love of Nature, there comes at once to one, the name of W. Atlee Burpee!
To the poor man, struggling by the sweat of his brow, for daily bread, he has brought the satisfaction of knowing that he " may not carry much seed out into the field and shall gather but little in ", but, on the contrary, he has given good " seed to the sower, and bread to the eater .".
Tempted by false prophets, in the guise of some particularly elaborate catalogue , one may temporarily err and stray, only to return , sadder and wiser.
From the humblest flower in grandmother's dear old garden, to the rarest exotic , one may safely turn to him for the best.
He has put courage into the discouraged, heart into the disheartened, and shown us the reality of : "The earth, the living church of ancient joy."
