Edward begun to mow this morning with the machine behind the barn.

[[underlined]] Tuesday 21. [[/underlined]] I have worked the greater part of the day about the garden & house.
James Patterson brought down Florra, James & Malcol to spend a little while with us. He informs me that Johnson has been defeated with the loss of 5,000 men. Mrs. Peale went with him as far as S. H. Mary went soon after to procure articles for the family her mother came home with her. A telegraph Express says [[underlined]] Charleston ^ [[insertion]] Virginia [[/insertion]] is taken[[/underlined]]
Edward has cut soome grass with the machine this morning, and took in all that was cut yesterday being two loads of hay.

[[underlined]] Wednesday 22.[[/underlined]] Mrs. Peale and Mary went this morning in the carriage to Potte. got home after night. I painted all the afternoon on N. 90.
Edward took in 5 loads of hay this afternoon and begun to cut the grass in the upper meadow back of the garden this morning.

[[underlined]] Thursday 23. [[/underlined]] I painted all the morning on N. 91 a fruit piece, a water Mellon, Cotera Mellon, &c. Edward had commenced cutting his Rye & took in 2 loads also 2 loads of Hay.
Mrs & Miss Randle, Miss K. Levan &c called.
Amelia Pott & Cosin from Chambersburg & Bennys wife called this evening.
Mrs. Peale finished her new Carpet & spread it to see how it looks, it is neat but not showey.
E & Louisia, Clara & Flora went this evening to S. Haven.

[[underlined]] Friday 24. [[/underlined]] I have worked the greater part of the day in the garden, transplanted Parsnips, Cabbage &c. Edward has had some grass that this morning & brought in all cut yesterday 2 of 3 loads and a load of Rye. Mrs. Fisk and her children came this afternoon Mr. Woolf and Sarah Levan came also.
Mrs. Peale and Mary went this evening to S. Haven.
