stretched it this afternoon.  It has been so long since I worked in the shop, that my tools have become dull & out of order.

[[underlined]] Sunday 29th. [[/underlined]] James and Stewart Patterson came down this morning and dined with us, they found the roads very muddy.  Towards evening Edward took Louesia & Mary to see Mrs. Benny Pott who has lately been confined. the took tea there.  They bring noose from Orwigsburg that Genl. Mead has defeated Genl. Lee and taken 18,000 prisoners, I am much afraid it is a sunday dispatch not to be relyed upon.  The news received on Thanksgiven day was most astownding.  The capture of many thousand prisoners, sixty cannon &c at Chattanooga and the retreat of Genl. Bragg and our forces porus in pursuit of him, we now hold Lookout Mountain & Missionary ridge &c.

[[/underlined]]  I made a stretching frame for the sketch of a strawberry plant which I painted from nature in the garden several years ago, the plants were sent to me from Reading by Mr. F. Hubley, they bore most profusedly for three years.  I this afternoon put a new background but didnot touch be berries, the leaves I shall retouch. N. 95.  
Mr. W. Levan sat to Mary this morning, she went to S. H. with him and walked home to supper.

[[double underlined]] Tuesday December 1st. 1863. [[/double underlined]]  I painted the greater part of the day on N. 95.  The carpenter put a new roof on the oven and weather-borded the front of the kitchen.  got the lime ready for whitewashing the end of the house and front of the kitchen 2 pounds of sulphate of zinc 2 pounds of salt to half bushel of lime, Mr. Emerie is to do it.  Mrs. Graeff sat to Mary this morning.

[[underlined]] Wednesday 2. [[/underlined]] I painted a good part of the day on N. 95. was going to work at the pavement found the sand too much frozen to go on with it.  Fanny sat to Mary this morning.  Edward has been all day thrashing with horse-power and as the straw was removed it was baled emediately.
