April 1826.
[[underlined]] Sunday 2d. [[/underlined]]  We got here (Holmesburg) last evening.  Burd came to meet us at 6 oclock, but we didnot get to the Carrs until they had started, we therefore had to wate until 8 oclock train, which made it dark in getting to the depot  Mary walked to Burds and I rode in somebods carriage found Burd & Burdie quite well.
While we were at breakefast, the Baptist Church near Burds caught fire and was completely burnt out before church time, this is a sad loss for Holmesburg  we went to Church it being Communion Sunday after dinner I wrode out with Burd and called at Mr. Fuller's this is quite a pleasant family, the house is large surrounded by handsomely laid out grounds with gravel walks and evergreens &c.
[[underlined]] Monday 3d. [[/underlined]]  We left Holmesburg at 9 oclock and got home just in time to hear of the evacuation of Petersburg Va. and soon after the evacuation of Richmond Va. at 12 oclock the State House bell began to Ring fiercely and all the Fire Steam Engines and the various Hose and Ladder Companies begun to collect in front of Independance Hall, ringing their bells and sounding the steam whistles at a great rate and then formed a procession and came past our rooms, we had a good sight of them and pleased with their whistles and ringing of their bells &c, the ladies at the windows saluting them with their white Handkerchiefs as they passed by us.
    I took a long walk for me up 5th to chesnut, to 7th, down to Walnut, up 5 to Chesnut To 8th and home again, the longest walk I have made since my stay in Phila.

[[underlined]] Tuesday 4. [[/underlined]] Mr. Moran came this morning, and painted on my Landscape, present Mrs. Hazelton, Anna Sellers and Mrs. Christie.  We didnot paint any today being in a great measure unhinged by yesterdays excitement.  We opened ^ [[insertion]] the [[/insertion]] leading box contained a picture that Mr. William Tatham lent to try the experiment of restoring it by the vapour of Alcohol and found much brighter than when it was put in on Saturday evening.
Lydia called this morning to see us, says that Emma made her first essay of going to school from Norris town yesterday, was very tired last evening.
