otherwise, though we wanted more Buffalo and a good Rhino or two. I think C & I will both be glad when this Safari is over & we start out again on a fresh one. He & I get on excellently but the third is not always easy.
[[underlined]] Jan 18. [[/underlined]]
An unlucky morning. The lions were quite close all round last night & there was some fine roaring. We were away to visit the bait as soon as there was enough light to see our rifle sights. As usual there was not lion on them, though they were a good deal eaten. C & I were making down stream when we suddenly saw a lion & lioness on the other side of the river. We ran as hard as we could, but by the time we were across the river & within 200 yards of them they had disappeared. 
However Bates who had been on that side of the river had seen 2 more within 100 yards of him which had gone down into the river bed. We were hunting along the river for them when they rushed away, giving C. a snap shot which had no effect. 
I did not even get a glimpse of them. Meanwhile a fine black mained lion was seen going away
