This day has been gleefully spent with me old friend Hals at Haarlem He could more than paint when it comes right down to pure painting though his whole canvases are somewhat [[imprecis?]] as a rule. Still there are parts of them that are as exquisite as any thing Ive seen. The two or three that he did at eighty, gorry there is superb stuff in them
I tried to work it so I would not have to pay every time I came in after lunch etc and I guess I saw everybody in town from the burgemaster down or rather up as he was the last I saw and he finally fixed it so that once a day would be sufficient not but what they are worth paying was alright, but I wanted to see on a [[puch? push?]] what my letter would do. In case I copy it entirely free. Burgemaster was very fine and talked good English

Spent today at the Ryks after which I took a walk and then went down by the docks. It was bully down there after dark and moon made things better still Dinner and then went over to the "Pan opticum" a cafe concert where they have good Music. Was a bit early as only two others were ahead of me. How ever they recognized me by starting off with the "King Cotton March"
Later in the game a fellow gave an imitation of "Sarah Bernhardt" which was funny as the duece just like her but awful
Think I'll go out to Franze's tomorrow for a last look. Im glad I saw the Spanish Don's work first. Its a good balance wheel for the world.
