July 13

First crit. People scared. Fine talk by Mr. Chase. Hals, artistic, finish & finished, Rem.-Hals quality, as to Bouguereau & Gerome, enthusiam. Fine crits. Mr. Wadsworth. Mine! In the afternoon, painted the Old Dutch Woman - a dandy. Saw the Boter Markt going on. Pewter plate.

July 14

In the morning drew in charcoal the same model. Mr. Chase approved and gave me ideas about drawing with the joints etc. in mind. Afternoon by the Spaarne Sketch not too bad on the whole, but perspective at first a la ladder. Prof. Weiser turned up for supper. Walked, talked and beered with him.

July 15

Drew (in charcoal) a head in the morning. Felt my limitations in drawing. Afternoon - painted on the Spaarne - a little further up than usual. Bothersome boys. Prof. Weiser said good-bye. Miss Haight went by "H. City".

July 16

Drew in Brinkman's garden after calling on Mr. Markus, a young Dutch artist, whose acquaintance I have made. Nice studio - landscape of the Dutch School, good. Went with Zell to the Teyler Museum (second time).  E.  machines, mineralogy, paleontology. Three picture galleries mostly terrible, but some fine Maris, Maure, Israels, Mesdag, Weissenbruch. Drawings, water-color. Painted still-life in my room. [[superscript]] Kruese took supper here. [[/superscript]] Evening - concert at the "Vereeniging" with Mrs. Irons and Miss Haight. Under the trees. Big brass band. Rain. Ran for umbrellas. Bath.

July 17

Rose even later than usual. Drew. Interpreted for Miss Bissel.  Was spoken to by Eugene Paul Ullman. More still life in the room. Mrs. Irons left - homesick. Pleasant evening, Mr. Scott's birthday songs.
