August 4
  Went to studio. Helpful crits. from Mr. Chase, and lots of interesting talk between poses. In the afternoon, Mr. Chase painted. Big attendance, Mr. & Mrs. van Rijn, Mr. Markus. Little girl. Sketch was delightful. "One of his best". Raffle. It went to Mrs. Bernhardt. (Mrs. Scott read.) Walked around and saw Kermess. Tinsel and catchpenny. Nothing I wanted, but the waffles (the principal industry) were very good. Palingen. Short shooting. Merry-go-rounds.
August 5.
  Rose early and made a sketch by the Spaarne before breakfast. Then went to studio and drew. Afternoon up the Spaarne and over.

Made sketch in the green fields. Record-breaking day: three things for crit. Went to Kermess after supper, tried my strength with the mallet etc. Tired.
August 6.
  Drew in the Studio and ran over to the gallery as usual. Everyone pleased with my photos of the class at the Mauritshuis, took orders. Afternoon went to organ recital at the Groote Kerk, the star one of the year, they say - Organ grand. Stabat Mater, Bach, Gounod, Mendelssohn's Wedding March, Dutch hymn. Letter from Alf. Sketched by Spaarne. Betts' took me to Kermess. Bathed!
August 7.
  Cleaned my brushes and put a tone on a canvas in my room. Next to studio and drew. Not excessively successful. Wrote letter and took it to Post-Office. Heard awful scandal!
