Sketched by Spaarne but did not finish. Played Air from Bach, the new Tschaikovsky piece etc. with Miss Carter. They were appreciated. Late supper with Miss Haight.

August 8.

Sketched the Nieuwe Gracht. At first the bystanders' remarks are funny, then interested, then approving. After dinner went to Museum. Every look a fresh delight. Came home and completed sketch of day before on Spaarne. New boots. Talk after supper and heard Mr. Townsley's college songs. Then Mrs. Allender, Miss Heilprin, Mr. Tareedy and I walked by the Spaarne. Glorious moonlight. The ship that passed. Dusky sail like the Jap prints. Home and heard nice music (Dutch hymn etc) at the Circus Carré.

August 9.

Cleaned brushes etc. Breakfast & talk with Mrs. Scott about people, Miss Haight etc. Finally got started on letter to the Correspondence Club.

Lots of talk about Vollendam; Miss Niles who has just been there thinks it very fine. Driving with the Wadsworths and Miss Rheinlander. Zandvoort, Bloemendaal, Brederode. Beautiful day. Green fields and trees. Sunday crowds in the usual colors. The castle very interesting. Explored. Drove home and mentally sketched the fine afternoon light.

August 10.

Rainy. Turned in five oil-sketches and two drawings at crit. Also three questions which Mr. Chase answered interestingly. Said one of my things was the best I had ever done. (Miss Corson applauded). Afternoon went to Amsterdam. Saw the Stedelyijk Museum: qualitative Courbets, Rousseau, Troyon, etc. Sparkling and glowing Maris, Maure, Breitner, Witsen. Israels (see list). Then (after meeting lady) went to Jews' quarter and meeting Mr. Chase were
