August 17
Wrote on club letter till about time to start for the Hague and then made a break with Zell who just came back from Vollendam and full of it. Mr. Chase was missing when the train pulled in but we just went on to Israel's studio. Arrived there (in rain). We went through big halls with fine things in them. Beautiful reception from the bright little old gentleman. Talked of his work etc (see notes) "Spain." The "Israels" corner. Great time. Got a carriage after leaving having seen the Mancini, Maures etc and speaking of Dr. Hunt, and went to Café Riche where we had a fine dinner as before with beer. Then of course to the Mesdag. It was better than we had thought and always will be at each returning visit. Did the foodquartier, with the push. After supper heard the dreadful news about Mrs. Geosh.

Then came home and took out the masterpiece which I worked over amidst the conversation of no less than four English-speakers.
