September 14.

Woke early went out, but lay down, rising however in time to get Mrs. Allender's letter written before breakfast. Read; and visited upstairs. Musician's bill. Tip nuisance  [[?]]. Many vessels. Fire Island Light Ship and house. Lunched festively, after that packed. Passed Sandy Hook very close. Pilot on board. Immigration and customs inspections. Ugly questions. Went above. Coney Island. Gave money to Burg.

Statue of Liberty. Sky line of New York. People going wild. Hot. Red sun; smoky look of city. Buildings seen close by. Saying good-bye. Confusion, steeragers trying to get out. Made declaration and helped Dutchman. Saw folks on dock. Great waving. Got ashore and was welcomed. Trouble about trunks. Father and Mother went home. Introduced Alf. Finally found trunk among "Ts" and got in long, slow line to get an inspector. At last did so; a pleasant enough young inspector who went over trunk rather easily but far more thoroughly than Europeans. Appraiser, register, baggage. Got away. Glass of beer. Ferry, crossed with some of party. Went to Murray Hill. Splendid supper. Came home. Regular N.Y. crowds in cars. Home.
