Met Mr. Chase at the Royal Academy (Went down on bus with Misses Johnson and Stolman).  Array of awful stuff suddenly broken by a Sargent.  "Lady in Brown".  His imitators.  We went from one Sargent to the other.  "Lady in Green", "Mrs. Werthheimer"  "Marquess of Londonderry".  [[insert]]  Abbey [[\insert]] Furse's splendid Lady with hounds.  Brandwyn.  The real story-tellers, limit of rotteness in "Moses & Dowie [[?]]".  Went around

corner to the New Gallery.  Same story:  Sargent the whole thing really.  Shannon and Solomon not very high above crowd, the former more so.  Nice old lady "Joachim".  Lavery.  The worst things yet.  The "first lesson picture", the monkey.  Went and lunched at a Lyons place.  Took tube to the Bank.  Walked to the Guildhall.  Old building.  Attendance about a thousand.  Irish exhibition.  Lavery, Alexander Roche, 2 Shannons, J. F. Murphy.  Big show.  Artistic work. Quality.  Sometimes too purely colorizing, but a delight.  Sheeler and I went to Jermyn St. via Bond St.  Swell crowd, swell stores, B. & H.; waited for Mr. Townsley but gave order at last when he did not come.  Very tired.  Walked and saw Mr Townsley.
