July 6

Went to studio, attended to customers and then climbed out on window ledge and painted street - better but still very unsatisfactorily. Tea and lunch with very nice crowd. Scovill posed in afternoon; five, big crowd. I paint two full, head and body - an improvement. Cleaned up and figured up at length. Came home on the double quick.
After supper and smoke, (having seen Mr. Jacgrusts[[?]] art-treasures) I came up and practised. Betts came in soon and took a hand; then Mrs J. sent Dick up and we went down, enjoyed playing with accompaniment. Talk with Miss Farrar and others - the South, the negro, Tanner, music.
