Onlookers; two more persistent than others began to talk, turned out to be Sidney Hallowes - exhibitor at R.A. and brother. Most cordial. Brother came running back thinking gentleman might like to see 150 yr. old English garden. He did - great. Gladstone's retreat, R.A. pictures. Brother quoted Browning, invited to call. Hastened home, and to studio painted from girl. Not altogether awful but I scraped. Home with Schamberg. Fixed up thumb box, after supper, then took Hokusai to Miss Herr. The folks there. Nice evening. Message from Miss Corson. [[end page]] [[start page]] (44) July 9. Woke up at ten minutes to four, resolution was for 4.30. The extra forty minutes did me - no sketch. Started to Don Whiteside's. Found place and him - luck. Hearty reception, went with him a way, talking. Then steered for N.G. via Cliffords, saw latter after wait. Nice, but no biz [[above line]] wants. V Dyck [[above\line]]; unless to buy my work. Then Hanfstaengel's. Got repros. and showed M.M.A.'s - got order. Then lunch. Then N.G. Soaked up a little Italian spirit. Met by Mr. Townsley, talk. Venetians, Veronese. Flemings and Germans. Spaniards. The divine Velasquez. Home on bus, writing kata-kana - better. Sketched pipe etc in thumb-box - not too awful. After supper, a Whistler in a lane. Walk, good pipe and home, to wash up. July 10. Lazied very much over dressing breakfast, smoke and preparations. Walked to Adelaide and got shoes shined. Came back and started letter [[end page]]
