July 12.

Started to practice, but Sheeler and Betts hurried off to Nat. Port. Gal. There was no hurry. We shopped. Gallery very interesting for the subjects but only a few for the treatment. Sargent's "Coventry Patmore" - dead swell, one of his best. Reynolds and Gainsborough. Fine examples of former. Hogarth, Raeburn, Romney, G. Stuart's portrait of Benj. West beautiful. Many old and interesting.
Then went to N.G. and had a delightful time. Went out, lunched, inquired about books and walked. Studio. Miss Taylor's friend. Mr. Chase painted old lady - very well. Great pleasure to see again. Mr. Norman talked and showed great original Hokusais. Announcement that Sheeler had won prize. My things not up but that was not my fault. Home. Talked and played games after supper. Wrote to Bell.
