July 13.
Rose earlier. Got out into a vacant lot by Rosslyn Gardens and sketched weeds and backs of houses. Seemed fairly successful. Went to studio and worked from old lady. Not so very good. Cleaned up and came home - tardy as usual. But felt good over morning thing. Day warm. Chin-chin and smoke in evening. Then Schamberg and I went up hill together on his errand. Nice old shopman. "Beautiful" apollinaris. Wrote diary.

July 14.

Mental alarm clock as miss-firey as usual. Got up by ponds and sketched strand and distance. Tough subject and little success. Lunch and hurried to studio. Model not posing so Miss Herr did, very charmingly. I made a bad pencil sketch. Then Schamberg and I came home and hustled to Sargent's. Met and introduced to him. Big, handsome man. Wonderful water-colors in hall.

Venetian scenes etc, sunlight color wash. Mancinis about. Portrait of Joe Jefferson. Then to studio. Miss Wertheimer (?) Captivating - entrancing, dash, plume, spirit, construction learned from Mancini(Portrait of him) "Italian with Rope." Then to large light studio. Jadoo Gher. Marboroughs. Great compositions for nobility; family, sketch, Countess of Warwick and son, fine. The child's leg. "The man in white", character still-life bigness, "Man with glasses" modeling of bald head. Quiet lady with books; young lady, many small things, nude and semi-nudes. But what sank furtherest into me was the "Madame Gautreau". Black and pale flesh. Marvelous. Subtle. Painting of eye. Modelling of forehead - apparently by its own will. Beauty and exaltation. Cigarette. Mr. Chase in fine feather. Fun over compliment. Good-bye; we were dazed and drunk when we got out. Exclamations of joy. The mood lasted. Letter from home with great news. Wrote
