July 19.

Went off to South Kensington.  Read very nice letter from home on the bus.  Met Mr. Chase and saw the pictures with him.  Splendid little Barbizon things, Tys Maris, Courbet, Ingres, swell Degas.  Then Constables that made your hair stand on end.  Grand.  "The Hay Wain" studies sepias.  Met Miss Farrar and went back with her. Enjoyed it.  Saw original Raphael cartoons.  Great things.  Got emotion from them.  Beautiful Italian wood carving.  Got out-not easily, and took underground.  Came up at Marlborough Road and got started on head.  Not very good.  Mr. Chase criticism helpful.  Stopped early and went to Earl's Court with Schamberg.  Crowd came together.  Fine grounds.  Pond. "Flying machines".  Met

Mr. Chase.  The big Segantinis, Correigated [[?]] painter. The rest mondern stuff, not good till you got to the Marcinis (3) Beautiful.  The difference.  Good statuary, then to dinner; a good one with soup and wine.  Mr. Chase nice and hospitable, the people jolly; music; post cards with signatures; cigarettes.  Then to Venice.  A good imitation.  I enjoyed it.  The sky.  Neapolitan singers.  Enjoyed that.  Gondola ride with Miss Murphy.  Wandered, smoked and out, to chutes, watched.  Miss Myatt fainted.  Too bad.  Confusion getting home.  Poor girl.  Sent for doctor.

July 20

Miss Myatt a little better, but it is not light.  Went to studio and painted still-life.  Fair start.  Nice time at lunch and took up head.  Pulled it into some shape.  Always a hurry up to get home.  Talked with Miss Farrar and Miller and Schamberg after supper.  Then went up and tackled letters.
