magnificent Rembrandt (3), Ruisdael grand, glorious "I know of none finer in the world." Metsu, Brouwer, Hals, Hoffeman etc. Italian wall. Titian grand glorious, great examples; Tintoretto - composition, beautiful; Parmigianimo; copy of Guido's "Michael". Went to living rooms - nicely furnished not good photographs. More pictures. Some more-than-dubious Velasquezs. Splendid Holbein. Splendid Pintoret. Goodbye to the great house and the fine earl. In evening - smoke talk, showed prints and Hokusai to Miss Farrar and played Mr. J's new violin. Bath.

Rose at six. Tackled socks & gloves - awful job. Right after breakfast, Schamberg and I started off by tram for Petticoat Lane. Advised to go in rough togs but we did not do so. No need - simply crowded, noisy, dirty, fairly smelly

streets with hucksters and buyers. The genuine corkscrew curlers, wonderful old types, crafty eyes, misery, and yet, finer aspects. Lascar (?) Cheap stuff. Bedlam. After lunch went to Mr. Chase's - Kensington. Showed "Dorothy and Sister" "Mother and Child" "Kot's" "Ring-Toss" "Mother Sewing" "Flower Girl" "Barmaid" and "Fish". Ullman's piece. Tintoretto. Sir Thomas. Went to Santer's. Nice house - very fine studio. "Nocturne" and "From the Balcony" much admired. Portraits have many good qualities but not successful. Dry spirit. Nice man, interesting face. Took cabs to Brangwyn's (Queen St. Hammenn Temp Lod). Received by hearty, simple, pleasant-faced youngish man. Splendid decorative pieces. Color. Small picures - charming. Working studio. When people had gone out into garden for tea, Mr. Brangwyn showed us Japaneseries grand!! Pottery, wood, lacquer, gold screen, prints and Kakemono!!!
