say goodbye. First we went to Mr & Mrs Richard Tucker's. She wasn't home, and he was taking it easy in the true Saturday afternoon style. Then we went to see the Shilstones and found them in their garden. They are such a nice couple! We had a glass of gingerale and a pleasant visit with them. She told us the following tale: -
Miss Harford took a girl from the orphan asylum, and she was going to train her to do housework. Instead, as the girl was fairly well educated, she used her as a secretary and left the girl in charge of her money, accounts, and other personal matters. Right after breakfast we finished our packing, and then had to sit around waiting for Miss Harford to come home. When she did she brought luncheon guests and when we said we were going before lunch she acted so hurt that like a couple of "weakies" we gave in and stayed.
I wouldnt put it past her, in the light of what happened, to have insisted we stay and meet the guests, so that we would be in a mood to forget any possible complaints. She was even so kind as to have ice cream - the only time we ever had it in spite of the fact we had told her how much we liked it. One quart for 10 people!
