I have quite a few chats with Miss Du Boulay in the evenings.  This evening she was telling me of how terrified she was when she chanced to be in Harlem one Saturday and she saw all these very independent looking negroes.  Not being accustomed to this kind of negro she was sure they must all be bad or at least a danger to any white woman.
She also told me a tale of the St Vincent riots ... Some friends of Mrs Date (who is a St Vincentian) were going into town on that eventful day.  The two ladies were driving themselves, and they came to a bunch of men in the road.  Not knowing anything about the riot they slowed down, to avoid

hitting anyone, and two men jumped on the running board & forced them to stop.  Then with shouts of, "Italy kiss Abyssinia", they kissed and mauled the ladies as they sat in the car.  Some more respectful men of the crowd finally forced them to stop.

Dick went down the Soufrière Valley and I stayed home.  First I read and then I decided to do a little walking around the garden.  I cut flowers for the rooms upstairs which Miss d.B. is getting ready for the Administrator - red white & blue color scheme.  Dollars, to -.... they don't even notice it!
After lunch, when I was resting, a great commotion heralded the entrance of Mr Baynes, Mr Bell and Capt. Wright-Nooth - the Capt's voice was raised above them all. He is inclined to be a little noisy.  After washing up and having a little tea they started out on their round of inspection so we had the house to ourselves until after our dinner.
After dinner Miss Du Boulay asked me to come out and meet the gentlemen - I did, altho' I didn't insist that Dick come.  Mr Baynes is a short, fairly plump man - yet of energetic appearance.  He has a slight inclination to stammer.  He is very friendly and not at
