down for breakfast in good time. Had buckwheat cakes which were good, and the same English waiter we had when we left St Vincent, which was not so good.
During breakfast we anchored at Fort-de-France. Dick had had an idea of going ashore & looking around but I successfully discouraged him. It might be interesting to come back here if we could afford to live in the place.
When up on deck, after breakfast, a lady came by & asked 2 boys near us if they would like to see a green bug which had just flown on deck. As the invitation was rather general we went too. Her husband had the bug in his cap and we all talked and admired it. This led to further friendliness and we chatted with them most of the way to Dominica.
They are Mr & Mrs J.J. Crain (John Jason) of Wallingford, Conn. (Teleph. 448). They have been spending the last 8 months in Barbados. They have a son, Jason, & daughter, whose name I have forgotten. Mr Crain is a Cornell man - electrical engineering. He is retired but is still interested in leading an active life. A few years ago they were in Pasadena while he took a course under Milliken. She took a very difficult course "which

was over my head most of the time". In other words she learned how to swim.
Her son Jason was taking a graduate course in insurance at Cal in 1933. They have all travelled a lot and seem to be a most interesting family. - That is if the children are anything like the parents. About 10 o'clock we left Martinique and about 11 we were passing Mt. Pelee. We could see the wide lava flow which covered St. Piere. It was a most interesting sight but we couldnt get a very good picture of it as Dick was downstairs getting a hair cut and I couldnt get the camera open to take a picture.
On board the ship with us was the party which had gone to Demerara to study & paint wild life. Beebe's assistant Miss [[blank space]] was in the party. I knew who the other members were once but have since forgotten.
Mr David Stirreys (sp) the cruise director, was also back with us.
We had a nice lunch, altho' this time the food on the Nerissa didn't seem like such a godsend to us. I was a little sea sick. Probably because I took bouillon at 11 o'clock and it made me hungry.
