the Lee's garden to pick some lettuce for Mrs Oakley. This is the first year the Lees have had a garden, but it looks nice. They have corn, tomatoes, lettuce, beans & kale. They have no success growing papaya in Mayaguez.
We got back to the Oakleys just a little before lunch time. Mr Oakley has a bad cold and he doesnt look well, even tho' he keeps going. He treats her rather as if she were his child, but she seems to like it that way, as she told me she didn't think it was a woman's place to take the responsibility. She is so pretty and femenine - almost doll-like - that the role suits her, but I could never be that way.
We had some very interesting talks. She was an only child and her maiden name was Carter. She went to Baylor University in Waco, but never got her degree as Bill wanted to get married. This lady is a 'Badian and her husband is manager of one of the sugar centrals. She is very friendly, and seems to have a lost a lot of her 'Badian accent.
We had our ice cream and then drove home in a "publico" or public car. When we got back we found Dick and Dr Danforth had arrived, and Mr Oakley was inside getting some candy packed into boxes for [[strikethrough]] some [[/strikethrough]] [[insertion]] a party [[/insertion]] they are giving for the laborers children. When I say "they" I mean the people at the Station.
I sat down and helped Mr Oakley pack, while she got things ready for dinner. We had far more candy than boxes to put it in, so we were thru' before seven.
Mr & Mrs H. Atherton Lee came to dinner. Neither of them are staid as the name looks. To our amazement we discovered that they were Californians. She went to College of the Pacific and [[strikethrough]] is [[/strikethrough]] [[insertion]] was [[/insertion] a resident
