Branca was disappointing. It is probably some years since Dr. Campos Porto was there. The campo is invaded by Melinis. I got a fairly good lot, about 25 species, but nothing I'd never seen before. [I didn't take weeds, only listed them.] I walked miles and miles getting them, and ate a big dinner on my return, having gone all day on black coffee and a bit of bread.
It was the usual heavy Brazilian dinner - all protien and starch - but I thought I was inured to such food. Coming from Lavras to Casa Branca I

saw the most extensive stretch of river marsh (varzea) I'd seen yet, along Rio Muzambinho. I had to stay over night at Tuyuty - no trains go through. Instead of going on in the early morning I went back (still earlier) to Areado where I saw a gigantic grass I'd never seen before.
