Sunday 13th October
Mr Vanderpool came for me and took me; and Liet Lee an intimate of Henry's - up to the Hospital - where the two doctors said he had only an even chance - They did not allow us to see him. and we came away feeling pretty sure he couldn't weather the storm - as he has [[?]] so little strength to fall back upon
I worked on a map - for the S.O.S. project all the afternoon at 10 Rue de l'Elysee - and went over to see Geoffrey Dodge late - took supper by myself - not finding Jack - or Tom Cushing to sup with and then when I got back to the hotel, found word that Henry had taken a turn for the worse, and by great good luck I got a cab - (with a horse!) and drove out there. spent the night at the Hospital
Monday, 14, October
Saw Henry take his last breath. at 5 this morning.! - he died in harness smiling. he was "on duty" doing all that he could do to help in the great enterprise It was a rather terrible night to recall - to hear the struggles made by a friend with Death - and to be able to offer no help whatsoever. I could not sleep - and the doctor found me wide awake when he came in about 4. and said "your young friend has run into very heavy weather - I'm afraid he won't last it out" - I began to detect the beginning of the end his struggle became less hopeful - and I therefore went into the room - and saw his peaceful liberation
And something not Henry at all lay before us on the bed - [[erased]] that [[/erased]] it had contained him but a moment before -
Went to the Red Cross H.Q. and reported the death and learned that they would take entire charge of everything
Not much of a day for me - as may
