Next day. August 1st
Left [[?]] - about 9 oclock - Big guns booming again this morning
Came to Waton where we had a most excellent lunch. and paid well for same.
A newly established Y tent was full of Tommies & Yanks waiting for the cantine opening.
Watched some "Yanks" from the South. who were sorting shoes - their comments and soft accents most amazing.
The trip shows clearer than anyones description the conditions. and the type of men to meet them. I am much better prepared now to make proper selection of men for the work - it is evident that no women should be in here as at present working - but women would help a lot. the right kind - like Mrs. Sloan at Bordeaux. Left Shoemacher here - and proceeded on our way to Dunkirke - where we saw a Hun airship which had just been shot down - and burned - its charred remains being exposed in the Public square.
Lecrett Bradley. was not in his tent but - he had gone to Calais -
Arrived at Calais about six oclock - and I put up at the hotel near the station.
After supper - I walked out though the old town to the sands and sat there. watching mini scupers and patrol boats put out to sea - 5 sausages flew in the sky when I returned [[strikethrough]] and [[/strikethrough]] I had no sooner gotten to bed before the horns blew an Alerte - and as my room was under the roof and the Hotel close to the railway station it seemed prudent to dress and go to safer regions - and I therefore spent a couple of hours with others - on the ground floor. and heard a number of bombs arrive in Calais
