Got all tangled up with cavalry troops - going and coming from watering their horses.
Counted 12 Sausages in the sky.  After various tauntings & turnings (all full of greatest interest - passed a wonderfuly camoflaged battery (French).  we got onto the main Paris-Calais high road - and proceeded along at a rapid gait.
Lack of oil caused a stop. soon after dark. and a generous & polite French Colonel gave permission for us to be replenished - he cigaretted the group of officers who gave us the [[?]] to our dry Lizzie - and proceeded again.
- The "Admiral" soon found difficulty in seeing his way clearly. - He had had a long hard day. and his eyes are not strong. and so I advised we run Lizzie onto the roadside and sleep to windward of her - and this we did
August 5. Monday.
Slept very well. - the night was calm still. and clear until a short shower. about 6. - 
At 6.30. we got up refreshed. and a man and woman came out of a house close by. and scolded us. for not waking them up and taking lodging under their roof.
They gave us delicious coffee (with Sugar). and of course would receive no pay for same
