The rest of the afternoon we rested. In the evening we took a walk towards Kilchurn [[?]], and sat down to draw, but were so disturbed by the gnats, that we were compelled to quit.

4th. Weather dull. Father had headache. Mother cut out flannels, and fixed father's cap. I copied the sketch of Iona Cathedral on to the watercolour block. After dinner Father copied a sketch, mother sewed. I wrote Lilly drew and played.

5th. After breakfast we set off up a high hill, towards [[Inversing?]], and as the morning was very beautiful we had some fine displays of colour on  Ben Loy, and the mountains beside it, and there being a great deal of heather it threw a warm purple hue over them. when we reached the top of the hill we had a view of Loch Ave, but as there were no fine mountains it would not do for a sketch. Looking the other way, we got a sketch of Ben Loy. This is a fine large mountain, and has

in its profile some very good drawing. On the way home, we got another sketch.
After dinner we were ferried across the river Orkney which runs past the house we lodge in. Then we walked along a beautiful level tract of meadow land, of 2000 acres, which is rented by fifteen farmers who all know their lines, although there is not a fence to be seen. These are employed with their families making hay, and had just sat down to take their lunch, so there were many fine groups for a figure painter. They were very brightly and pictured only [[?]], with pink and white short gowns, and red & blue and black skirts. After a while we reached Kitchum Castle, which is situated at the lower point of the level plain. It is scarcely as large as the castles of [[Caernarvon?]] and Beaumavis, but when new has been as fine a building.
